San Angelo Symphony : April 17-23, 2005
Following their engagement in the Midland, Five By Design headed southwest for a weekend engagement with Hector Guzman and the San Angelo Symphony. We first met Hector several years ago in an engagement with the Wheeling (WV) Symphony. He suggested to come to perform his orchestra in Texas.

We had several days of r&r which were used for the development of our new show, Stay 'Tuned'. We were treated to hours and hours of classic television variety shows, including Perry Como, Ernie Kovas, Sid Caesar, and started selecting musical numbers for the production.

Friday, April 22nd we had an evening rehearsal of the ASU campus and performed in the basketball arena. Our good musician friends, pianist Kurt Cowling (Milwaukee) and Matt Edlund (NYC) flew in from respective parts of the country for the gig. Little did we know who was going to be playing bass until Hector Guzman confided that he contracted Jeff Eckels for the job. Jeff originally hails from Bayfield WI. We had the opportunity to work with Jeff 17 years ago in Madison, Wisconsin. Jeff along with his wife and daughter Ella now live in Denton, TX. Great seeing you again!

Arlington & D.C. Tour #1 : Sunday, February 20, 2005—
Five By Design arrived in Falls Church VA on Saturday and the group kicked back for some serious rest and relaxation before heading to perform with the National Symphony.

Lorie's mom, Carol flew in from Green Bay to take part in the celebration on Saturday. On Sunday, Cathy's husband Trevor flew to D.C. to spend the week with her.

Bright and early Sunday morning, we headed to Arlington via the Metro to see the Arlington Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier replete with taps and changing of the guard. There was also a monument which paid tribute to the crew of the space shuttle Challenger. Later, we paid our respect to JFK and the eternal flame.

We headed across the Potomac to see the Washington Monument, the newly constructed World War II Memorial which was very poignant since Radio Days and Club Swing reflect that time period. Later, we paid our respects to the Vietnam and Korean memorials. The Lincoln Memorial overlooks the reflecting pool and the day was a wonderful and memorable experience. What a great country we live in! On Tuesday, we headed for the Holocaust Museum and the Museum of American History at the Smithsonian.
